2025 Black History Essay Contest Form

Essay submissions should speak to the resilience of a people who utilized some of their most valuable assets to rise above obstacles. Participants are to submit works that honor Black entertainers, artists, writers, justices, activists, leaders and visionaries, etc. Submission Deadline - Feb. 14, 2025 

Winners should be prepared and willing to read their essay on air with WGLT News should they be selected. Winners should also be prepared to have their professional photos taken for City of Bloomington and media promotion. 

Winners will be notified via email and announced February 22nd. Awards and prizes will be distributed the following week. 

1st Place Prize $150 VISA Gift Card and Award Trophy 
2nd Place Prize - $100 VISA Gift Card and Award Trophy 
3rd Place Prize - $50 VISA Gift Card and Award Trophy 

Essay prompt questions. All components must be addressed within your essay. 
How has the subject challenged the status quo in our society? 
How has the subject inspired or influenced your own life? 

High School Only: What have been the most important outcomes of the subject's impact on our society? 

Essay length guidelines: 
Elementary (Grades 4-6): 350-500 words 
Middle School (Grades 7-8) 350-500 words 
High School (Grades 9-12): 500-700 words
